Funky Guerrilla Story

The Funky Guerrilla Story.

The story (so far), told by co-founder Predrag Borojević, about an innovative startup from Gradiška in the north of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

I caught up with him in the Funky Guerrilla store in Gradiška.

Find out about the idea, the obstacles. highlights and downslides, and the rocky creative road to success.

In a country (Bosnia and Herzegovina) where success stories are really so far and few between, The Funky Guerrilla are, in way, trailblazers!

The Guerrilla Experiment in their own words and actions.

We’ve decided to think out of the box and get out of the comfort zone.

To move around and travel. Expand horizons. Change ordinary and boring for something that raises the adrenaline. And guess what? We’ve proven that we can have fun, create good things and live to the fullest, just the way we want. In Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Together. We are #funkyguerrilla.

About the experiment.

1) The Guerrilla Experiment is a creative experiment where we wanted to test what happens, if we send out a team of 5 people to live, work and create something meaningful together. We wanted to offer the opportunity to the participants to express themselves with the tools they master, in our case film making, photography, modelling and acting, and search the inspiration while moving around stunning landscapes of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Finally, we wanted to give them a break of realities they live in and push them out of their comfort zones to boost their personal learning, development and creativity through the group collaboration in an unknown setting. As well, we wanted to see how Funky Guerrilla applies in various landscapes, lakes, mountains, forests, waterfalls, bridges, Olympic scenes and towns of our country.

The journey.

2) The Guerrilla Experiment is part of an 18 months long international project »Social Entrepreneurship for Social Change« held by Udruženje Most (owner of Funky Guerrilla) and funded by the European Commission’s Erasmus+ Program for Youth. Project of three activities started with the Training course in Gradiška in April 2016 and finished with the Youth Exchange in Sant’Agnello, Italy, in May 2017, also included 11 social innovations in local environments in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Italy, Montenegro, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia and Spain.

The Guerrilla Experiment was designed and implemented by the CET Platform Slovenia and included five creatives from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Slovenia.

Since the April training was based on the Funky Guerrilla case, we wanted to offer a creative solution for them to be used in their branding activities. Having one goal only – to come back with a film for commercial use, the team developed the idea of inspirational journey of a couple, tired of the reality we live in (in all involved countries the rate of youth unemployment is high, the youth seems to be very apathetic and discouraged to grow and develop), who at some point decide to leave everything behind and just go.

To go on a roadtrip to explore, discover and source inspiration from stunning landscapes around our country and moreover, to explore themselves and discover their existance in this world.

The couple follows only one quote: »Mind has no answers and Heart asks no questions.«
From a logistical perspective the team was on a road for 4 days, driving about 500 km with two cars and filming in between. 1st day was spend building a team, traveling from team dream to dream team.

Next morning the caravan left Gradiška, passing Jajce and after a wrong turn they accidentally discovered a lovely lake and later on the most beautiful mountain ever which, we think, influenced the entire flow of the journey. Also, we believe that the most beautiful shots were taken exactly there.

Finally, finishing Day 2 with a sunset in Mostar. Day 3 took lead to the serene Blagaj and through the magnificent canyon of Neretva river towards Sarajevo with a quick jump to the Trebević mountain. Rain in the late afternoon made the team quickly adapt the plan, so the sunset became the sunrise and the team had some rest to collect the energy for the final filming day. Day 4 started at Žuta Tabija and continued with Bosnian coffee in the secret streets of Baščaršija, in the early afternoon the road took us back to Gradiška passing final photo location, Vlašić mountain.

Altogether 5 people, 2 cars, 500 km each, 100GB of material, 72h of filming, 12 locations and 6 roads in between.

Why to experiment and responses from people.

3) As said, the experiment was designed and implemented by CET Platform Slovenia, where we wanted to test a couple of learning and work methods in real time. Key components were Funky Guerrilla clothes, landscapes and symbols of Bosnia and Herzegovina, young Bosnians, inspiration, creativity, road trip, group work, work under high pressure, improvisation, (re)using available resources.

Hypothesis 1:

Forming international group and sending them into the wilderness with one goal – to film, will create a bubble, special environment where people will connect, have fun and film the commercial ad that will reflect the energy from the trip.

Hypothesis 2:

Funky Guerrilla applies perfectly in the landscapes of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Main reason to call this project an experiment is that this really is experiment. Not only we wanted to test what happens in the bubble, we as well wanted to give the opportunity to involved to fully express creativity without borders or limitations. Also, we wanted them to discover Bosnia and Herzegovina and prove that Funky Guerrilla applies perfectly in various city- and landscapes of the country.

For everyone in the group at least 3 locations of filming were visited for the first time, in fact one of the videographers visited Bosnia and Herzegovina for the very first time. You can enjoy his impressions in many »on the road« scenes.

We were following the development of group dynamics and energy through selfies taken in all locations, the team really became one unity and the film is a result of extremely high team spirit and dedication of each member, contributing with what each of us knows the best.

Each evening, after dinner, the group sat down and discussed the day, checked material created and exchange opinions on the process as well as general feeling.

When we came back to Gradiška it was time for personal evaluation of the journey and the results suggest that having creative experiments that allow participants to fully express themselves is not only good idea, but as well essential component of each individual’s creative development through out the year or career and highly influence the level of inspiration and motivation in their everyday work and life.

Film was shown to the Guerrilla Community in Gradiška and on Play Media Day 02, where entire industry was gathered. Impressions are beyond expected, very positive and suggesting that the energy from the journey is being spread.

Since June 1 is available on Youtube (https://goo.gl/jhEjpS) and has gained quite good attention from the public, as well as the industry.
