Jovandan – Slava 2016.
Yesterday evening (19 January), I was invited to my neighbours house, here in the village, and enjoyed some amazing hospitality, with a never ending abundance of tasty traditional food.
The evening was a pre-cursor to today’s event, also at their house.
Today has been St John the Baptist Day (Sveti Jovan), and those followers of the Serbian Orthodox Faith, have been celebrating Slava.
Every year I am very fortunate to be invited to experience an integral part of the Serbian “calendar”.
Slava is a family’s annual ceremony and veneration of their patron saint, a social event in which the family is together at the house of the patriarch, (head of the family).
Slava also brings friends and neighbours to the house.
The family saint is inherited from the father.
This tradition is an important ethnic marker of Serb identity.
Serbs usually regard Slava as their most significant and most solemn feast day.
It truly is a “Feast” Day in every sense of the word.
